PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a decrease of regions where disks are usable and to avert the occurrence of a seeking action in head changeover even with a magnetic disk device into which the disks previously subjected to servo writing are built. SOLUTION: This magnetic disk device has plural magnetic heads, >=1 magnetic disks recorded with position information before being built into the magnetic disk device and positioning means for selecting the one magnetic head among the plural magnetic heads and positioning the one magnetic head onto the surface of the magnetic disk facing thereto in accordance with the position information. The position information is recorded onto the magnetic disk surface over a range wider than the movable range of any magnetic head among the plural magnetic heads. The corresponding relation between the position information recorded onto the magnetic disks and the actual head position is changed in such a manner that the seek action of the magnetic heads does not occur before and after the changeover of the magnetic head.
