A gas-discharge tube in series with an inductor for generating oscillations or pulsed electron or ion beams and having a current regulating constriction between the cathode and the anode, is operated at such pressure, e.g. in the range of 10<SP>-4</SP> to 10<SP>-2</SP> mTorr, that the discharge varies between a high current low voltage plasma condition and a low current high voltage space charge condition. In the embodiment shown the constriction is provided by a series of annular partitions 5 the diameter a of the envelope being critical in the relationship p.a> A for the plasma condition, where p is the gas pressure and A is a parameter depending on the type of neutral atoms in the gas. The neutral atoms are continually ionized in the discharge path and reformed in the pockets between the partitions after which they return radially to the discharge path. The anode 3 is annular and the end wall of the envelope may be provided with a window 4 for the emergence of an electron beam. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a longitudinal channel of critical length a is formed by an intermediate wall, the neutral atoms flowing axially. The channel is surrounded by a focusing magnet for the discharge. An embodiment utilizing both radial and axial flow of the neutral atoms is also mentioned. The cathode may be cold or of the heated type. The generated electron beam may be used for machining or vacuum melting or in polymer chemistry or for producing X-rays; a generated positive ion beam, e.g. D2, may be used for neutron generation; or the tube may be used as a pure oscillator. |
