A polyolefine or a polydiolefine is modified by first reacting with an unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or derivative thereof, at above 180 DEG C. and in the presence of a thermal catalyst but in the absence of any peroxide, and then heating the product at 140 DEG to 180 DEG C. with a substance which reacts with carboxylic groups, e.g. with a metal oxide, an amine, a diamine, an alcohol or a polyalcohol. In examples, the reactants are ethylene/propylene copolymer; maleic anhydride, gamma-crotonolactone or chloromaleic anhydride; and zinc oxide, magnesia, a diamine or ethylene glycol. The specified thermal catalysts are alumina, silica, silicates and clay.
