A coating composition comprises a matrix of a cold curing synthetic resin having dispersed therein a solid organic thermoplastic polymer in particulate form and of a contrasting colour, the bulk density and size of the particles being such as to ensure a satisfactory dispersion of the particles throughout the matrix. The matrix may be a composition of the kind described in Specification 1,045,584 consisting of a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, an unsaturated polyester resin which is not inhibited by air, an unsaturated polyester resin which is so inhibited, and an air-inhibiting compound, e.g. a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer (dibutyl, dimethyl or dinonyl phthalate), styrene, a high-reactivity polyester resin, a low-reactivity polyester resin, an air-drying polyester resin, stearyl laurate, a peroxide catalyst, and cobalt naphthenate. Sand may be added. The matrix may also be an epoxy-polyamide resin composition. The particles may be obtained by chipping or flaking polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon or vulcanized rubber. 30% or more (preferably 1-10%) by weight of the particles may be incorporated in the matrix, and the composition may be applied to masonry, stone, hardboard or chipboard, which may be given primer, base and clear coatings. A clear polyurethane coating may be applied over the hardened matrix coating.ALSO:A coating composition comprises a matrix of a cold curing synthetic resin having dispersed therein a solid organic thermoplastic polymer in particulate form and of a contrasting colour, the bulk density and size of the particles being such as to ensure a satisfactory dispersion of the particles throughout the matrix.
