PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discriminating device for dollar bills which can accurately the dominations and genuineness of dollar bills unsteady in terms of both a print and a form. SOLUTION: The discriminating device for dollar bills comprises a passage 1 where a dollar bill 9 to be discriminated moves, a conveyor device 2 which constitutes the passage 1, an upper sensor unit composed of an infrared-light emitting element 3 which is arranged above it and a light receiving element 4 which receives reflected infrared light from the object dollar bill 9 to be discriminated, a lower sensor unit composed of an infrared-ray emitting element 5 arranged below the conveyor device 2 and a light receiving element 6 which receives reflected infrared light from the object dollar bill 9 to be discriminated, a comparing means 7 which compares detection signals of the light receiving elements 4 and 6 with reference data on the top and reverse sides of respective genuine dollar bills to judge the domination of a genuine dollar bill, and a reference data storage part 8 which holds the respective reference data read in the comparing means 7 and mean values of the respective reference data.
