The personal authentication system processes a handwritten sample provided by the user using a stylus. The handwriting sample is recognized (51) compared (52) with a stored reference and if a match is obtained (53) the user is considered to be authenticated. To improve security the stylus emits an identification code which is detected and verified before the handwriting sample is accepted.
