PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost and to enable, high-luminance color display with respect to an image display device which reproduces an image by using a single light valve in the color order of the primary colors. SOLUTION: The single display device has areas irradiated divisionally with luminous flux which is split into the primary colors at the same time and is deflected upward and downward repeatedly in one video frame period. A light intensity detecting means which is arranged right nearby the display device detects the color components and deflection positions of the respective pieces of luminous flux to control the display device. Further, an inter-luminous-flux area where the colors are mixed on the display device is a black display area, which is adaptively changed to adjust color reproduction balance.
