PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader whose read efficiency is improved. SOLUTION: A cleaning roller 20 is installed in contact with contact glass 4 and its surface has a contact glass cleaning surface 21 fitted with a member (sponge etc.), for cleaning, a dirt reference surface 22 for detecting dirt of the contact glass 4, and a document contact surface 23 which comes into contact with a document when the document is read. In this constitution, the cleaning roller 20 having the dirt reference surface 22 and contact glass cleaning surface 21 is at the part of a document feeder which is in contact with the contact glass 4 and the dirt reference surface 22 is read to detect the dirt, when it is determined that the surface is dirty, the cleaning roller 20 is automatically turned to automatically clean the contact glass 4 and the cleaning operation is carried out when a read is not made to make the read efficient and accurate.
