PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element enabling improvement of numerical aperture ratio and suitable for higher density. SOLUTION: With the organic EL element with a striped positive electrode 12a, a hole transport layer 13, a luminous layer 14R, an electron transport layer 15b, and a striped negative electrode formed in turn on a transparent substrate 11, with length directions of the positive electrode 12a and the negative electrode 15b crossed, of which, a given voltage is impressed between the positive electrode 12a and the negative electrode 15b to have an area of the luminous layer 14R where the positive electrode 12a and the negative electrode 15b overlap emit light as pixels, and at same time, adjacent above pixels are arranged to emit different colors, the hole transport layer 13 and the luminous layer 14R are selectively formed in the area of the pixels, and the electron transport layer 15b is structured with a material which does not emit light even if a given voltage is impressed, and at same time, the area of the pixels and gaps between the pixels are wholly covered to form the element.
