The invention relates to a method for the degradation of biological and/or organic substances in a liquid phase, in particular for sterilising liquids, according to which a catalyst consisting exclusively of metal is brought into active contact with an oxidant. The catalyst consisting exclusively of metal is composed of the following constituents: at least one alloy element from a group I, at least one alloy element from a group II and at least one alloy element from a group III. Group I contains the alloy elements Ni, Mg, Ba, Ca, Sr, which form exclusively bivalent oxides below the Tamman temperature in an atmosphere containing oxygen. Group II contains the alloy elements Cr, B, Al, Ga and indium, which form exclusively trivalent oxides below the Tamman temperature in an atmosphere containing oxygen and group III contains the alloy elements Fe, Cu, Mn, Mo, W, V, which in accordance with the temperature and gas atmosphere and in particular with the oxygen partial pressure, form oxides with different oxidation stages. Said method is characterised in that the catalyst consisting exclusively of metal is tempered and that the exclusively metal catalyst thus obtained is brought into active contact with the oxidant and the substance.
