Production of glass balls comprises partially softening glass fibers or glass rods under the action of heat on their ends; removing, spraying or atomizing portions from the softened parts of the fibers or rods; and forming the glass balls by cooling the glass portions based on the minimization of the surface energy. Preferred Features: Softening of the glass fibers or rods is carried out by inserting the ends into a gas or plasma burner or into a laser beam. The glass portions removed are converted into glass balls by thermally spraying.
