The invention relates to a method for identifying pain-controlling substance s using BNPI and/or DNPI. The invention also relates to the use of compounds thus identified, of active agents that bind to BNPI and/or DNPI, of antibodi es directed against BNPI and/or DNPI, of antisense nucleotides against BNPI and/or DNPI, or of BNPI and/or DNPI, or partial proteins thereof, in additio n to the use of corresponding polynucleotides as medicaments for pain therapy and as diagnostic agents.
