A multi-layer optical system comprises a metal layer having on one or both sides a number of layers none of which completely covers the metal layer, these layers comprising (A) a layer packet consisting of: (i) a colorless dielectric layer of refractive index (n) of not more than 1.8 and (ii) a colorless dielectric layer of refractive index (n) of at least 1.8; and (B) an optionally selectively absorbing layer.
