1,083,519. Working metal by laser beams. M. L. VOSCHINSKY, A. I. ARTEMIEV and L. N. LEVIN. April 27, 1966, No. 18475/66. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions G2 and H1] Apparatus for treating a workpiece 12 by means of a laser beam comprises a microscope 6 for observing the workpiece, and a movable shield 13 for screening the microscope optical system from radiation during working of the laser. The laser comprises a ruby crystal 7 excited by a flash tube 8 supplied by a firing coil and a battery of capacitors (3), Fig. 1 (not shown). An illumination chamber 9 with an internal mirror surface encloses the crystal and flash tube. The beam passes through a prism 10 and objective lens 11. The microscope shield 13 may comprise a pivoted member 21, Fig. 3 (not shown), actuated by a solenoid 14 upon pressing a button 24, Fig. 1 (not shown). This moves the shield to obscure the optical system and simultaneously actuates a microswitch 20 for energizing the firing coil of the flash tube 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 40 (not shown), the shield 29 and microswitch 35 are actuated by a flexible cable 31, 38. |
