The invention provides an electric furnace for the production of magnesium alloys comprising a working chamber (1a) made in the form of a lined cylinder (6) with a horizontal symmetry axis and two adjacent heads (8), said heads having a shape selected from the group consisting of truncated cones, cylinders and hemispheres made of refractory material possessing ferromagnetic properties up to a temperature of about 800 DEG C.
