To apply a fiber layer to the under side of an unbonded band of yarns (11), the fiber layer (12) is pressed by the upper level of a moving conveyor belt (60) against the under side of the yarns, close to the knitting zone (2) of a warp knitter. An air cushion, in a whole surface and diffused structure, lifts the detached fiber layer from the conveyor to the under side of the yarns, so that the fiber layer is moved together with the yarns to the casting-off plane at the knitting zone. The air distributor (73), for the air cushion, is of a fine-structure porous plastics or a porous ceramic or sintered metal material or it is a fabric or foam filter material.
