An axial pin tumbler lock assembly 10 comprises an open ended, non-rotatable, tubular barrel 14 having an axial bore, first and second annular front and a rear end face, a lock shaft 42 rotatable within the bore and having an enlarged head 70 presenting a rear end face in rotatable sliding contact with the second front end face of the barrel, co-operating barrel and shaft tumbler pins, said shaft tumbler pins 66 projecting forwardly of the head and being freely removable endwise of the head 70, a forwardly removable cap 80 forwardly of the barrel fixed interengaging means on the cap and barrel preventing rotation of the cap, the shaft 42 being rotatable from a first unlocking position, through a second locking position to a third overrun position, slidable interengaging means on the cap and shaft head normally preventing removal of the cap, said slidable interengaging means permitting forward removal of the cap when the shaft 42 is in its overrun position. As described a detent member 135 rotatable with the shaft 42, carries a manually operable limit stop and detent pin 137 yieldingly and slidingly bearing against the rear end face of the barrel 14, said rear end face having first, second, and third spaced shoulders engageable by the detent pin to determine the first, second and overrun positions. The cap 80 has rearwardly extending hook portions 86 which together with the side walls of voids 122 in the barrel 14 constitute the fixed interengaging means to prevent rotation of the cap, and together with a flange 88 of the head 70 constitute the slidable interengaging means which permit removal of the cap when notches 120 in the flange 88 are aligned with the end portions of the portions 86, the shaft 42 then being in the overrun position. Raised shoulders 165 and 141 Fig. 6 on the rear end face of the barrel 14 limit movement of the pin 137 to a 90‹ sector 139 and hence the shaft 42 is then rotatable only between its locking and unlocking positions. When it is desired to remove the cap 80 a pin-like tool is inserted through a hole 131 in the cap and an aligned bore 133 in the barrel so that its end engages the pin 137 when adjacent the shoulder 141 to raise the pin above the level of this shoulder and allow it to run over a 22¢‹ sector 143 of the end face till it abuts a further shoulder 167, the shaft 42 then being in its overrun position in which the notches 120 are aligned with the portions 86 and removal of the cap 80 is permitted. The detent member 135 shown comprises an annular body with a spring loaded flexible ring carrying the pin 137 riveted thereto. The body is relieved behind the pin 135 to allow flexing of the ring when the pin 137 is raised. In an alternative embodiment the pin 137 and a loading spring are carried in an axial socket in an annular body.</p>
