Sorting rolled, especially rod-like steel products having defects comprises guiding several rods (8, 8') simultaneously through an optical mark recognition device (9) whose detection signals determine the automatic elimination of the defective rods. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The rods with the defects are lifted from the transport surface and are removed by a gripping device. The rods without defects are lifted from the transport surface, removed by the gripping device and led to a further treatment station.
