A permanent magnetic motor including a plurality of permanent magnets (A,B,C) fixed to a rotor body (4) which is disposed on a rotor shaft (6) with each permanent magnet (A,B,C) arranged on that body (4) such that an axis passing through the poles of each magnet (A,B,C) is substantially tangential to the nominal circumference of the rotor body (4) and substantially transverse to a radius extending from the centre of the rotor shaft (6) to the permanent magnet (A,B,C); and that at least one mechanically reciprocating permanent magnet (D,E) arranged to intermittently align a magnetically similar pole face with the faces of the permanent magnets (A,B,C) fixed to the rotor body (4); such that upon urging the mechanically reciprocating permanent magnet (D,E) into close proximity to a permanent magnet (A,B,C) on the rotor body (4) causes the shaft with the embodied magnet (A,B,C) to rotate.
