PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MAG welding method and a backing member used to the method with which the stable welding can be performed and a high quality finished product can efficiently be obtained. SOLUTION: In the MAG welding (metal active gas welding) method directing a welding torch 40 toward the upper side from the lower part of members 12 to be welded, the copper-made backing member 35 is abutted on the butted part of both members 12 to be welded from the back side of these members and the welding is performed with a solid wire under atmosphere of mixed gas of carbon dioxide gas and argon gas.
