PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an N×M non-blocking mechanical fiberoptic matrix switch of. SOLUTION: A first plurality of stages (16) each support a ferrule (24), surrounding one end portion of corresponding one of the N input optical fibers. A second plurality of stages (18) each support the ferrule (24) surrounding one end portion corresponding one of the M output optical fibers. Mechanical mechanisms (20, 22, 30) move the stage in parallel along a plurality of X and Y axes, perpendicular with each other to align a facet of a selected one of the N input optical fibers (12) with a facet of selected one of the M output light fibers (14). The stage (16) of the input optical fibers (12), the stage (16) of the output light fibers (14), or both stages have mechanical mechanisms for moving the ferrule into and out of the alignment holes of a central panel, along the Z axis perpendicular with respect to the X and Y axes to physically mate the facets of the coupled fibers. |
