PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect purification performance of HC by HC adsorption catalyst having an HC adsorption material and an oxygen storage material. SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device for an engine in which an exhaust gas adsorption catalyst 27 is arranged in an exhaust passage 22 is provided with a first oxygen concentration control means 43 for controlling oxygen concentration in exhaust gas flowing into the HC adsorption catalyst to release oxygen from the oxygen storage material when the engine is in an operation condition in which HC is desorbed from the HC adsorption material of the HC adsorption catalyst 27 and a second oxygen concentration control means 44 for controlling oxygen concentration in exhaust gas so that oxygen concentration in exhaust gas inside the HC adsorption catalyst 27 or in a downstream part thereof becomes a predetermined set value.
