PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for an automatic permeability test, wherein a change in a water level coming into contact with a fluctuating negative-pressure space can be measured precisely in a constant water level-type permeability test. SOLUTION: In the apparatus, the coefficient of permeability (k) of test soil 1 is found by the constant water level-type permeability test using an airtight Mariotte container 5, and an ultrasonic distance meter 12 which measures the change in the water level S coming into contact with the fluctuating negative-pressure space is installed in the space in the top part inside the Mariotte container 5 having a prescribed horizontal cross-sectional area. Preferably, the distance meter 12 is installed at the top wall of the Mariotte container 5, and a memory 17 which stores the measured value of the distance meter 12 together with the measuring time is installed. More preferably, by a computer 19 or the like, a penetration flow rate Q is found on the basis of the product of the horizontal cross-sectional area of the Mariotte container 5 multiplied by the change portion of the water level S within a unit time, and the coefficient of permeability (k) of the test soil 1 is calculated as a function of the penetration flow rate Q.
