PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a structure capable of surely recognizing the replacement timing of a brake element, even if a sensor for measuring distance fails, without giving uneasiness to a driver by displaying the life of the brake element such as a pad. SOLUTION: It is detected by a cable detection circuit 11a that the lining of the brake element is worn by a specified amount. The mileage of a vehicle is measured by a distance measurement means 12a. A remaining life to reach an allowable wear limit thickness is obtained by using the remaining thickness of the lining when the lining is worn by a predetermined amount and the mileage in which the lining is worn by the predetermined amount. A display 14 indicates the life thus obtained. When a first sensor 19 forming the distance measurement means 12a fails, a distance is measured based on signals from a second sensor 20.
