PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical trial dyeing machine, capable of carrying out even the simultaneous trial dyeing of several color samples by utilizing a real production machine of a drum-type dyeing machine as it is, and having high stirring effects, and further to provide a pot for the trial dyeing, usable by the machine. SOLUTION: The trial dyeing is carried out by using the drum-type dyeing machine for the real production, charging the dye bath with water instead of a dyeing liquid, and heating the bath to a high temperature. The pots for the trial dyeing are detachably attached to perforated partitioning plates in the vertically rotating drum having the lower half soaked in the high-temperature water in the bath. The inside of the pot is partitioned by a perforated plate partitioning the pot to the upper and lower sides. The uniform dyeing is achieved by charging the lower side of the partitioning plate with the dyeing liquid for the trial dyeing, inserting the material to be dyed into the upper side of the partitioning plate, and slowly rotating the drum. The hermetically sealing lid of the pot for the trial dyeing has a safety valve for releasing the inner air when the pressure in the pot becomes a prescribed pressure or more, and an air-releasing structure for returning the pressure in the pot to the atmospheric pressure when reducing the pressure in the pot at the cooling time.
