a 1-antitrypsin is isolated from animal body fluids e.g blood serum and/or purified by contacting an aqueous solution containing a 1-antitrypsin at a molarity of from 0.005 to 0.05 and having a pH in the range 5.0 to 5.5 with a cation-exchanger having carboxymethyl groups and subsequently separating the a 1-antitrypsin therefrom. Specified exchangers are carboxymethyl cellulose and cross-linked carboxyethylated dextrans. The eluted a 1-antitrypsin may be separated from any buffer present by dialysis and freeze-dried to give a solid product.
