PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for coating, capable of forming a film having sufficient strength on the surface of a substrate especially of a glass and sufficient alkali resistance even if the coating film is thin and, in addition, having little iris. SOLUTION: This composition comprises a zirconium compound (a) coordinated with aβ-diketone and/or aβ-ketoester, a titanium compound (b) and at least one kind of silane compound (c) selected from the group consisting of alkoxysilanes and alkoxysilane oligomers, wherein the zirconium compound (a), the titanium compound (b) and the silane compound (c) are, if calculated by the mol numbers converted into to ZrO2 , TiO2 and SiO2 , contained in the ranges of 0.3<ZrO2 /(ZrO2 +TiO2 )<1 and 0.1<=SiO2 /(ZrO2 +TiO2 )<=5.0.
