A process for selective adsorption from a fluid mixture and regeneration of the adsorptive material comprises passing the fluid mixture downwards through layers of the adsorptive material (28, 28/sv, 28") separated by heating units (24/sv, 24"), with a heating unit (24) at the bottom, terminating the fluid flow, activating the heating units so that the higher the heating unit, the lower the temperature produced, passing purging fluid up through the heating units and adsorptive layers, and deactivating the heating units prior to during or after termination of flow of the purging fluid. Cooling fluid is then passed downwards through the apparatus possibly preceded by alternate up and down flow and finally a quantity of the original fluid mixture is passed downwards through the apparatus and then recycled. Apparatus is described comprising two adsorption units (10, 40) connected by valve means (34, 35, 36) which are adjustable so that while one unit is effecting adsorption, the other is being regenerated. Substances which can be removed are H2O, CO, CO2 C2H4, H2 and SO2. The adsorbate may comprise synthetic zeolites, activated alumina, silica gel, activated charcoal and dolomite. |
