PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly achieve objective optical characteristics of a cellulose ester film even when it is stretched at a low draw ratio. SOLUTION: A rod-shaped compound represented by formula (I): Ar<1> -L<1> -Ar<2> (wherein Ar<1> and Ar<2> are each independently an aromatic group; and L<1> is a divalent binding group selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups, alkenylene groups, alkynylene groups, divalent saturated heterocyclic groups, -O-, -CO- and combinations thereof) and having a maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) shorter then 250 nm in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of its solution is added to a cellulose ester film.
