A robot cleaning system which uses a mobile communication network is disclosed. The robot cleaning system includes a cleaning robot 100 for performing a cleaning operation by moving over an underlying surface, the cleaning robot operating in response to control data. A mobile communications terminal 400 generates the control data and transmits it to the cleaning robot 100 in a communications signal. The communications signal is received via mobile communications relay apparatus 200 which relays communications signals between the robot cleaner 100 and the mobile communications terminal 400. The cleaning robot 100 includes two cameras 121, 131, the cleaning robot transmitting image data generated from images captured by the cameras by means of a further mobile communications signal. A remote image process server 300 receives the further mobile communications signal, analyses the image data received, generates further control data according to what is detected by the cameras 121, 131 and sends the further control data to the robot cleaner 100. The system can be controlled at a location relatively far away from the robot cleaner, which is convenient for a user, and image processing boards do not have to be provided in the actual robot cleaner since image processing is performed at the image process server 300. Thus, the robot cleaner 100 can be made compact.
