PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an output state evaluation method of an engine capable of evaluating simply the output state of the engine in an actual vehicle. SOLUTION: A load generation device 12 is connected to the engine 10, and a load to be anticipatively applied to the engine 10 when the engine 10 is loaded on the vehicle is applied to the engine 10 from the load generation device 12. In the state where such a load is applied to the engine 10 from the load generation device 12, the control quantity of an ECU 14 for controlling the engine 10 is changed, to evaluate the output state of the engine 10. In this case, the load to be applied to the engine 10 from the load generation device 12 can be changed corresponding to the power transmission characteristic of the vehicle.
