The mobile unit consists of a carriage able to travel along the rails (18) by means of a motor/gearbox assembly (20) and equipped with at least one machining turret (22) with a milling head (24) and positioner. The carriage has two axles, each with two wheels, with the machining turret located between the axles in line with the wheels, so that the milling head is positioned over one of the rails. It also has a position detector for the relative positions of the milling head and rails, and a suction unit for removing chip produced by the machining operation.
