PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper conveying mechanism for an imaging apparatus capable of preventing pollution or damage of the recording medium even in the case a recording paper which easily absorbs a recording liquid so as to generate wrinkles is used as a recording medium. SOLUTION: A paper conveying mechanism for an imaging apparatus comprises a plate-like platen for supporting the medium substantially parallel to the head surface in the case a sheet-like recording medium to be conveyed from the upstream side to the downstream side in the conveyance direction faces the head surface of a printing head, a conveyance roller provided in the vicinity of the platen conveyance direction downstream side, a star wheel for pressuring the medium with respect to the conveyance roller for conveying the medium in cooperation with the conveyance roller, an actuator for moving the platen either in the direction of approaching the head surface or in the direction moving away from the head surface, a control part for controlling the actuator, and an input part for inputting recording medium information, wherein the control part controls the actuator based on the inputted information.
