To plug and/or drill a taphole at a metallurgical vessel (1), especially static electro smelting furnace (1a) where the molten metal flows through a sleeve brick (2) at tapping channel (3), the sleeve brick is closed with a plug (5) when the molten metal level (4) falls within (1b) the vessel. The plug mass is pressed into the tapping channel from the outside, and tapping channel is closed again.
