PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens which is provided with four lens groups as a whole and has the wide angle of view and a high variable power ratio and where the fluctuation of aberration associated with variable power has been compensated properly, and optical equipment using the same. SOLUTION: This zoom lens is provided with at least two lens groups, that is a 1st lens group, having negative refractive power and a 2nd lens group, having positive refractive power in order from an object side, and realizes variable power by moving the 2nd lens group to the object side, so that the space between the 1st and the 2nd lens groups at the telephoto end is smaller than that at the wide-angle end. The 1st lens group is constituted of two lenses, such as a negative lens 11 having an aspherical surface and a positive lens 12, in this order starting from the object side, and the 2nd lens group is provided with at least one negative lens; and the zoom lens satisfies the conditionνd12<22, if the Abbe number of the material of the positive lens 12 in the 1st lens group is get toνd12.
