Porous sulphur is prepared by heating the sulphur to about 150 DEG C., adding in either order a stabilizing agent and a viscosity increaser, forming bubbles in the molten mixture and then cooling below its melting point. A cellular structure free from voids is obtained. The viscosity increaser is selected from phosphorus, arsenic, selenium, phosphorus sulphides, styrene monomer, ethylene disulphide, "Thiokol" (Registered Trade Mark) and polysulphide rubbers and liquids. It preferably contains P2S5. The stabilizing agent is a finely-divided inert material with plate-shaped particles. It is selected from, kaolin, china clay, ground mica, aluminium pigment, talcs and sands with plate-shaped particles, "Permanent Yellow organic pigment" and "Hansa Yellow G" pigment. "Mistron Vapour" (Registered Trade Mark) is preferably. The bubbles in the molten sulphur are formed by mechanical mixing with a gas, adding a blowing agent, or mixing a liquid with the molten sulphur under such a pressure, that when the pressure is removed the liquid vaporizes.
