PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material testing machine capable of positioning a crosshead or the like so that the set inter-gripper distance can be automatically acquired regardless of the kind of the mounted grippers only by mounting the grippers and setting the inter-gripper distance. SOLUTION: The grippers 15a, 15b are photographed by a photographing means 40, and the shape thereof is recognized by image processing using the output. Size information of the pertinent grippers is read out from a storage means 31 for storing shape/size information of plural kinds of grippers, and a moving member (crosshead) 13 where one gripper 15b is mounted is automatically positioned so that the set inter-gripper distance L can be acquired.
