Application of pattern to a textile web, uses hydrodynamic needling. The web moves past beam of water jets across the line of travel. The upper of two layers is a nonwoven in one or more colors or is dyed or printed laid over a second fabric of different color. The material passing through the water jets causes fibers from the first layer to be dispersed into the second layer forming a pattern. The upper layer can be a nonwoven which is not dyed or has white fibers, laid over a woven or nonwoven layer with dyed fibers. The water jet streams disperse the white fibers of the upper layer into the dyed lower layer to form a pattern on the under side of the second layer. The second, bottom layer, is fixed before joining the upper layer such as by a mechanical needling action. The colored pattern is affected by the structure of the second layer, and the composition of the fibers, the fiber types and characteristics in the upper and/or lower layers. The pattern is structured by the shape of the unit which distributes the water jet streams on to the web, which is in front of or between the two layers, and also by the system which carries the web through the spray station. The water jet streams are delivered with a high energy, such as pressures≥150 bar and preferably 250-600 bar, to strike the fibers of the upper nonwoven layer. The water pressure energy is set according to the weight of the upper nonwoven layer. Lower water pressures of up to 150 bar are used with lighter nonwovens of 30-100 g/m<2>. An Independent claim is included for an assembly to pattern textile web materials, with a patterning unit such as a continuous woven or perforated belt between the jet beam (11) and the web layers (5,8) to be processed.
