PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for a heavy hydrocarbon oil containing a large amount of extraneous materials, such as sulfur, residual carbon, metals, nitrogen and asphaltene, which is excellent in decreasing or suppressing the amount of the sediments to be formed and a hydrogenation treatment method using such catalyst. SOLUTION: This catalyst is formed by depositing the oxide of periodic table group 6A metals, for example, C2 , Mo and W, at 7 to 20 wt.% based on a catalyst weight and the oxide of periodic table group 8 metals, for example, Co and Ni at 0.5 to 5 wt.% on a porous alumina carrier. (a) The specific surface area of the catalyst is 100 to 180 m<2> /g, and (b) the total pore volume is >=0.55 ml/g and (c) the total volume of the pores of >=200Å in diameter is >=50%. The hydrogenation treatment method for the heavy hydrocarbon oil comprises bringing the heavy hydrocatbon oil into contact with the catalyst for hydrogenation treatment in the presence of hydrogen under conditions of 350 to 450 deg.C and pressure of 5 to 25 MPa. |
