Animal fat is processed to separate into meal, fat and stickwater and a portion of the stickwater and the meal are mixed to form pellets having a core of wet sticky meal and a cover of substantially dry meal, the pellets then being dried and granulated. The separation is effected in an inclined cooker from which the meal is fed to a rotary drum dryer from which substantially dry low protein meal is extracted and fed to a hopper. Some of the stickwater removed from the cooker is fed to a container attached to the meal containing hopper and is dropped on to meal being discharged from the hopper. The wet meal is fed to a shaker unit comprising a series of three inclined plates the second and third of which are screened and all of which support transverse baffles which are of varying heights and some of which are perforate. The mixture fed to the shaker unit works its way round the baffles and due to the continuous vibration they form wetted nuclei coated with dry particles which move through the perforations. The granules formed by this agglomerating process are fed back to the drier for further drying. |
