A metal removing tool is mounted on a shank comprising a sintered metal containing refractory carbide grains, such as 15-65% by volume of TiC, TiC/WC, NbC, VC and TaC, dispersed in an annealed steel matrix. In an example a powder mixture of 5-7 micron TiC, 20 micron Fe, C and paraffin wax is milled in hexane, pressed and sintered at 1435 DEG C. in vacuum. The sintered compact is annealed at 900 DEG C. for 2 hours and cooled at 15 DEG C./hour. Low, medium or high carbon steels or alloy steels may be used as the matrix. |
