[Also in Divisions B4 and F2] A tapping device comprises a driving part 16, Fig. 1, adapted to be connected to a machine tool spindle, at 114, and a driven part 10 axially slidable on part 16, the drive being by means of balls 24, and the relative axial positions of parts 10, 16 being adjustable by a nut 56, against a tension spring 38, and compression springs 62. Balls 24 are located in grooves 20, 22 in parts 10 and 16 and they are carried in a cage 26 which also carries balls 32. A member 34 is rigidly secured in part 10, and is connected to one end of tension spring 38 the other end of which is connected to the end of a body 36. The latter is screwed at 52, and cooperates with hexagonal nut 56, which is located in a similar bore 54 in part 16. The two compression springs 62 are disposed between a flange 58, and a washer 60, and the initial tension and compression in springs 62, 38, is determined by the position of nut 56, which position is adjusted by rotating body 36 by means of a tool (68), Fig. 4 (not shown). A holder (14), Fig. 5 (not shown), for the tap comprises a seating (80), which co-operates with member 34 in part 10, and a groove (92) which co-operates with balls 84. A sleeve (98) is slidable in the holder against a spring (92), and the tap is held axially in the sleeve by at least one ball (108), and is driven by a non- circular cavity (94). The drive is supplied from the machine spindle to an inner sleeve 112, Fig. 1, which drives a ring 132 through a ball 128, ring 132 having cams 134 which co-operate with similar cams on a second ring 124, which in turn drives part 16 through a ball 120.
