METHOD FOR TREATING WASTE WATER CONTAINING DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE AND MICROORGANISM FOR OXIDIZING DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To oxidatively decompose dimethyl sulfoxide in waste water into dimethyl sulfone by a biological treatment. SOLUTION: Waste water containing dimethyl sulfoxide is treated with a fungus belonging to the genus Cryptococcus. Cryptococcus humicolus WU-2 is preferable as the fungus. Dimethyl sulfoxide in waste water can be directly mineralized by the fungus in combination with a dimethyl sulfone degrading microorganism.
