Extraction of an active agent (A) involves: extracting Salix (specifically Salix alba, Salix purpurea, Salix viminalis, Salix daphnoides, Salix fragilis or Salix pentandra) with water; hydrolyzing in presence of a protease; separating the soluble and insoluble phases ; and sterile filtering to give a total mesophilic flora content of less than 100 germs per g. Extraction of an active agent (A), rich in polyphenols of phenolic acid type, involves: (a) extracting Salix (specifically Salix alba, Salix purpurea, Salix viminalis, Salix daphnoides, Salix fragilis or Salix pentandra) with water; (b) hydrolyzing at pH 20-50degreesC and pH 1.0-4.0 in presence of a protease; (c) separating the soluble and insoluble phases (e.g. by decantation, filtration and/or centrifugation); and (d) sterile filtering to give a total mesophilic flora content of less than 100 germs per g, yeasts and molds being absent. An Independent claim is included for the active agent (A), obtained as above and having a dry solids content (determined by oven drying at 105 deg C for 16 h) of 20-200 (preferably 40-100) g/l, a pH (measured potentiometrically at room temperature) of 3.0-7.0 (preferably 4.0-7.0) and an overall polyphenol content (expressed in gallic acid equivalents) of 1.0-20.0 (preferably 1.0-10.0, especially 1.0-5.0) g/l. |
