PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage system employing a mobile phone that can be used for a data storage device for a personal computer so as to readily record data. SOLUTION: The data storage system recognizes a mobile phone connected to the personal computer via a USB cable as an external storage device (#3), determines the operating mode of the mobile phone based on a signal sent from the personal computer (#7), stores data sent from the personal computer in a data storage mode to a memory, transfers the data stored in the memory in a data transfer mode to the personal computer (#8), and transmits the data stored in the memory as electronic mail in a communication mode.
