Each reinforcing element is 1 - 3 cm in diameter, made from synthetic filaments 0.1 - 0.6 mm thick, e.g. wound in a spiral with an open outer surface (19) and an inner cavity (20) that is at least partially filled with the foam. The padding has one or more open channels (10) and individual cavities into which the reinforcing elements project to engage with fastenings on the covering layer or seat frame, the fastenings being in the form of metal hooks or harpoon-shaped plastic clips. During manufacture the reinforcing elements are placed in the mould close to its outer surface and attached to retaining studs before the foam is injected and polymerized.
