PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device for efficiently recording the various kinds of character data such as the title of a musical piece corresponding to respective code forms. SOLUTION: When the character data such as a disk name are converted to Katakana (the square form of Japanese syllabary) and Kanji (Chinese character) by a user beforehand (step S11), whether the converted character data can be recorded in the Katakana area of UTOC 1 or the Kanji area of UTOC 4 is judged (steps S12 and S16) and the character data are recorded corresponding to the judged result (steps S13 and S17). Further, the character data expressible by the ASCII codes among the character data unrecordable in the Katakana area of the UTOC 1 are judged (step S14), the corresponding ASCII code is read (step S15) and the code data are recorded in the Katakana area of the UTOC 1.
