PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the problem in the conventional receiving system of BS digital broadcasting that, when subtitles/superimposed characters are displayed, character recognition becomes difficult in the case where the color specification to neutral colors is not matched with gradation since a multi-level character is generated based on the color specification information transmitted from the broadcasting station side. SOLUTION: The multi-level character display method in which a desired character is displayed by displaying each picture element constituting a bit map in a specified color respectively according to the gradation level allocated to the picture element is constituted of a process to determine the gradational transition form of the overall color change from the foreground color to the background color, and a process to compare the brightness of the colors each specified to a plurality of neutral colors and replace the colors specified to the neutral colors so that the transition form of color change among neutral colors is matched with the overall transition form of color change.
