摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating device capable of maintaining optical characteristics over a long period and securing reliability by preventing aλ/2 phase difference plate from being heated and preventing the heat from being accumulated, which is provided with a polarized light converting means using theλ/2 phase difference film as a polarized light rotating element, and to provide a projector capable of stably displaying a bright projected image by using the illuminating device. SOLUTION: In the illuminating device provided with a light source, and the polarized light converting means for spatially separating a luminous flux emitted from the light source into two kinds of polarized luminous fluxes having different polarization directions, and then, projecting the luminous flux after rotating the polarization direction of one polarized luminous flux so that it may align with the polarization direction of the other polarized luminous flux, the polarized light rotating element for rotating the polarization direction of the polarized luminous flux is theλ/2 phase difference film, and theλ/2 phase difference film is formed on a heat conductive transparent substrate having a heat conductivity higher than that of general transparent glass.
