PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a metal-matrix composite material, an intermetallic-compound-matrix composite material and a composite material using a mixture of metal and intermetallic compound as a matrix, in which manufacturing steps can be reduced and simplified, and which is applicable to final products having large size and complicated shape, and to provide the composite materials manufactured by this method. SOLUTION: This method is a method for manufacturing a composite material consisting of a dispersed material and a matrix. A metallic coating layer is formed on the surface of the dispersed material to prepare a metal-coated dispersed material. The metal-coated dispersed material is filled into a jig regulated into prescribed shape, and the metal-coated dispersed material is impregnated with molten Al. The reaction between the metallic coating layer and the molten Al is allowed to occur to form the matrix.
